Chapter Fourteen

I was relieved that my decision was made, and knowing how happy it would make Toni, I planned a special evening to share it with her.

“You wouldn’t mind getting the estimate ready for this job, would you, Bryce? I need to run home and get dinner started before Toni gets there, and I’m already running late.”

Seated in a plush chair in front of my desk, Bryce rubbed his trim beard and appeared deep in thought. “Hmmm…it’s not an anniversary, although I do believe it’s the right time of the year for that.” Grinning wickedly, he continued. “You must have done something wrong, if you’re making amends by preparing a sumptuous feast.”

I pursed my lips, as if in thought, then said, “You should have warned me when you interviewed for your position that I’d have to explain my every action from the day I hired you until the end of time. If you must know, Toni and I have been discussing having a baby, and I’ve decided it’s something I’m willing to do. I want to tell Toni over a romantic dinner.”

Bryce’s eyes were almost as large as his mouth, which hung open in surprise.

“And before you get any bright ideas, that would be a romantic dinner for two. You‘re not invited,” I warned.

“A baby!” Bryce yelped.

“Shhh! I don’t want everyone to know yet.”

“But that’s wonderful! Please let me be the godfather,” he pleaded.

“Bryce, we’re only in the first stage of development here. We have a lot of work ahead of us, and it’s not a sure thing. What if Toni’s one of those women who can’t conceive?”

“Then it’ll be up to you to carry the baby,” he said matter-of-factly.

I glanced at him to gauge his seriousness. He wasn’t laughing. “Not an option,” I rose from my seat and gathered my belongings. “Seriously, Bryce, please don’t tell anyone.”

He rose and enveloped me in one of his crushing hugs. “I’ll keep quiet, I promise. Thank you for sharing your good news with me.” He smiled happily.

“Thank you for being happy for us. I’ll give Toni your endorsement.”
